Oil & Gas

Whittier Trust Company has substantial familiarity and capability with respect to oil and gas holdings.  The Whittier family’s fortune was founded in oil, and many of our clients hold a portion of their wealth in oil and gas.  The ownership interests are varied and include working interests, royalties, and leases.  We analyze investment opportunities on behalf of our clients in addition to overseeing existing investments.

Whittier Trust Company clients are given the opportunity to invest in our in-house hedge fund: The Whittier Long Short Fund (WLSF).  The objective of the WLSF is to provide its investors with consistent, attractive, after-tax returns over the long term by taking advantage of both positive and negative stock selection information.  It holds both long and short securities positions, so the fund is not be dependent on the stock market being up in order to generate positive returns.

The WLSF investment approach is to use fundamental, bottom-up research to identify stocks whose market price differs significantly from the intrinsic value of the company.  WLSF will buy companies that are perceived as worth more than their prices, and short stocks perceived as worth less than their prices.  Investments are primarily in small and middle-sized companies, which we believe are most likely to be priced incorrectly.

Real Estate

Whittier Trust Company also has substantial familiarity and capability with respect to real estate investment.  The Whittier family has a long and distinguished history in real estate investing.  In 1906, the Whittiers began Rodeo Land & Water Co., which owned and developed the city now known as Beverly Hills.  Today, Whittier Trust Company handles a diverse portfolio of commercial real estate; mortgages, notes, and real estate limited partnerships; and residential real estate.  Other services include asset management, oversight of property management, and purchase, sale and development consultation.

Venture Capital

Venture capital investments offer the potential to earn high risk-adjusted returns by exploiting the inefficiencies inherent in an illiquid private investment.  Whittier Trust Company’s investment team works with clients to:

-Identify and evaluate potential venture capital managers

Negotiate the opportunity to actually invest.

Whittier Trust’s access to quality venture capital managers results from its long-standing relationships with the underlying venture capital professionals.
